about
I wrote this song for the film "Things Never Said" in 2013. The film's Director, Charles Murray, asked for a specific type of song for the love scene between Kalindra Stepney (Shanola Hampton) and Curtis Jackson (Omari Hardwick). Kalendra brought a special kind of magic to the film. As I stepped into her energy while writing the lyrics, I felt she exuded an emotional vulnerability that I feel is rarely attributed to black women. I wanted to convey this feeling of femininity and openness in song form.
Curtis wanted to protect and love Kalendra, mind, body, and soul. He saw qualities in her, she herself, could not see. He loved her through her discovery of self and her journey to personal freedom. These characters and the love they shared were a huge part of the inspiration behind this song.
There is a dynamism to black women that challenges the monolithic way we are sometimes portrayed in society and mass media. For so long, our stories have been of overcoming adversity, trauma; only being seen as women of resilience, strength, and independence. Indeed, we are all of these things, and so much more...
Black women are also soft and vulnerable and delicate. We run the gamut of emotions and don't always have all the answers or solutions. Sometimes we can't get up out of the bed, sometimes we need a hand. Sometimes we want to be held, we want to be cherished. We need emotional support.
Black women are flowers that deserve to be handled gingerly; to be watered. To be loved, just like every other flower.
The message I hope this song conveys? See us, love us, protect us.
lyrics
Do U Care 4 Me (Reprise)
Vs1.
So fragmented
Fragile
You’ll never hear me say it
But it’s in my eyes
I’ve been torn down
But I reconstructed
After the destruction he did
Still I’m afraid
I tread carefully
I’m trusting you baby
Do you care for me?
Ooh lay me down
Love me how I’ve
Always deserved
To be loved by a man
Ch.
Do you care for me
Do you care for me
Do you care for me
Do you care for me
Do you care for me?
Break.
Vs2 .
You listened
To my words
You heard what
What they ain’t never heard
You recited me
Ooh verbatim baby
And darling this feels like
A rebirth
I’m not afraid
Why should I be
Should I be
oooooh
I’m inviting you inside
Accommodate me
Just lay me down
Ohoooo
And love me how I’ve
Always deserved
To be loved by a man
Ch.
Do you care for me
Do you care for me
Do you care for me
Do you care for me
Do you care for me?
Bridge.
Oooh
Let’s open the skies together
These harmonious moments
Do you
Do you care for me baby
Do you
Do you care for me baby
Do you
Do you care
For me?

Performance by Natassja
Natassja is a soul music artist whose contribution to the genre challenges the notion of what contemporary soul music should
be. Her urban-influenced and sometimes moody, folk-tinged arias involve more than a moderate degree of genre bending. From the folk of Dylan and Baez to the contemporary styling of Sade and Sting, Natassja steeps herself in music that moves her spirit....more
